Friends of the Amazon Jungle Lodge

Amazon Basin

Friends of the Amazon Jungle has cornered the budget jungle tour market. As well as offering dirt-cheap digs at its Iquitos office, it has neat bungalows a 45-minute boat ride from Iquitos – the price is for the whole bungalow, which sleeps two, so per person it's cheap. Enjoy hiking to waterfalls, kayaking and visiting jungle communities around its 1.6-hectare grounds.

Ayahuasca (derivative of a hallucinogenic jungle vine) and kambo (Amazon tree frog poison, used to cleanse and treat pain) ceremonies are conducted; both should be undertaken with extreme caution. If backpackers choose to make their own way there (ask about directions first!) and self-cater, the prices come tumbling down to under S100 per person.
