You'll know when you've arrived at Lakruwana, one of half a dozen Sri Lankan restaurants on Staten Island. The jaw-dropping bronze doors mark the entrance to this temple-like eatery, in which Buddha statues line the brick walls and prayer wheels dangle from the ceiling. The best pick is lamprais – aromatic curries and rice wrapped in banana leaf and baked.
The mouthwatering food also includes 'string hoppers' (rice noodles to eat with curry), and veg and flatbread stir-fry roti kottu. Weekends are the best time to come, when a buffet offers a wide array of temptations.
Nearby is the Sri Lankan Arts & Cultural Museum, run by the owner's daughter, with a collection of temple objects, statues, ceremonial weapons and musical instruments from Sri Lanka.
