Club Santana

Top choice in São Tomé

This resort has a welcome lack of pretension. While its tar-paper roofs resemble a tropical research station, it's so dated it's retro cool, and fits the island perfectly. The 1980s air-conditioned bungalows are spread over a hillside above a beautiful crescent beach, within sight of a fishing village on an attractive cove.

The waterfront sports a chill-out bar, a hot tub and a new horizon pool. Higher up is the restaurant, which has fine buffets and killer pizza. Unlike so many nickel-and-dime resorts, there's a long list of freebies, including trips to the capital, São Nicolau, Monte Cafė and the nearby Ilheu de Santana. Snorkelling equipment, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are free as well. Plus you've got the island's best dive operation on site. Only 20 minutes from the capital, this is a better option than the in-town resorts, albeit with more nicks and scratches. Unfortunately TAP agrees, and reserves the standard rooms for its aircrew well in advance, limiting availability. Reserve direct.

Note that all the facilities at the resort are open to the public. The resort only asks that you spend €15 while you are there, a super deal, as you can spend this on lunch. This makes Santana a great day trip from the capital, and a nice complement if staying at Ondas Divinas. Turn seaward at the wooden sign south of town.
