Pyounghwa Clothing Market

Part of Dongdaemun Market, the Pyounghwa Clothing Market is a mind-bending warren of identical stalls selling clothes, fabric and accessories. You've got to wonder how the vendors find their individual booths among the many thousands here! Much of the action is wholesale, and liveliest after dark. Weekends are quiet.

The market's origins can be traced back to the 1950s, when North Korean refugees, then living in slum housing along the Cheong-gye-cheon, made and sold clothing repurposed from old army uniforms. 'Pyounghwa' means peace in Korean.
