Refuge du Lac d'Allos

What a spot this lovely lakeside inn has, plonked at 2220m by the water's edge, with mountains on all sides. In situ for more than a century, it's a classic stop for walkers with hearty mountain food and dorm beds for the night. There's no public road access, so you have to work up a sweat for lunch; it's 40 minutes walk from Allos.

Dorm beds cost €41 for half-board, including dinner and breakfast.
