Holland Hotel

Top choice

This beautiful 1928 Spanish Colonial building has elegant rooms with carved wood furniture, Western-style artwork and sleek bathrooms. The lobby, with its leather chairs and wood-beamed ceiling, is a classy place to unwind, with the good Century restaurant attached. The fanciest room is the 4th-floor ‘Crow’s Nest’ ($250), while the tiny 'Nina's Room' is ideal for solo travelers ($75).

Fair warning: the train tracks run right by, so wear the provided earplugs or risk being awoken by a woo-woo in the night. A bonus: you can use the swimming pool at the Holland's sister property, the Maverick Inn, a mile northeast.
