Explorer’s Inn Tambopata Ecolodge

Amazon Basin

About 58km from Puerto Maldonado (three to four hours by river) and featuring 15 rustic double and 15 triple rooms, sleeping 70 people, all with bathrooms and screened windows. Around since the 1970s, this is a more open lodge than most, in a pleasant grassy clearing dotted by fruit trees near the confluence of Ríos Tambopata and La Torre.

The central lodge room sports a restaurant, a bar and a small museum; outside is a soccer pitch and a medicinal garden.

The place is located in the former 55-sq-km Zona Preservada Tambopata (itself now surrounded by the much larger Reserva Nacional Tambopata, and just inside the reserve buffer zone). More than 600 species of bird have been recorded in this preserved zone, which is a world record for bird species sighted in one area. Despite such (scientifically documented) records, the average tourist won’t see much more here than at any of the other Río Tambopata lodges during the standard two-night visit, which misses out on the macaw clay lick at Collpa Chuncho. The 38km of trails around the lodge can be explored independently or with naturalist guides. German, English and French are spoken.

Book online or at the Puerto Maldonado office.
