Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica

Top choice in Amazon Basin

Down the Madre de Dios, almost 16km from Puerto Maldonado, this top-end lodge offers a luxurious look at the jungle. About 40 rustic individual cabins have bathrooms and porches with two hammocks. Tours here include 10km of private hiking trails, and a series of swaying, narrow, jungle canopy walkways up to 35m above the jungle floor for flora and fauna observation.

A huge, traditionally thatched, cone-shaped, two-story reception, restaurant, bar (built spectacularly around a fig tree), library and relaxation area greet the traveler. Some of the southern Amazon’s best meals are served here; travelers with special dietary needs can be accommodated. There are occasional alfresco barbecues, sitting areas upstairs for imbibing views or spotting birdlife, and a separate building housing a good interpretation center. Guides speak English, French or Italian. Higher tariffs listed are for the six suites, with huge bathrooms, writing desks and two queen-size beds each.
