Run by Belmond, this exclusive hotel has one feature no other can match: location. Attention is impeccable and rooms are comfortable, with sober decor, docking stations and eat-in options. Mountain-view rooms cost more. There's also a spa, manicured gardens and personalized Machu Picchu guide service. Among the two restaurants, a popular lunch buffet is open to nonguests (US$40; 11:30am to 3pm).
Though it's the only place to stay at Machu Picchu, the advantage is minor, since buses start running early to the ruins and the early closing time means even hotel guests are denied that cherished panoramic sunset photo. It’s often full, so book at least three months ahead.
