This boutique hotel has been thoughtfully renovated to reflect its original 1837 splendour and overflows with period touches, particularly in the public areas. The rooms, which aren't quite as ornate, include ones dedicated to King Alfonso XIII of Spain and author Knut Hamsun, both of whom stayed here.
Features include an antiquarian library, an atmospheric lounge area (complete with stained-glass windows), a superb restaurant (lunch mains 175kr, dinner menus 285kr to 495kr) and a fragrant garden courtyard. In summer the hotel hosts a concert series, with everything from classical performances to big-name Norwegian stars.
