For lovers of breathtaking nature and outdoor activities everywhere, the Italian region of Calabria has a new hiking trail to offer – one that connects the two seas from one coast to another.

Discover the best rural towns in Italy for a return to slow living

The Kalabria Coast to Coast trail connects the town of Soverato on the Ionian Sea to the town of Pizzo on the other side of the region, on the Tyrrhenian Sea. It runs for 55 kilometers among mountains and beaches with a huge variety flora and fauna to spot, rich nature and an even richer history – since Calabria was part of Magna Graecia and has more than a millennium's worth of culture for visitors to enjoy. The trail was created by the Kalabria Trekking association and was several years in-the-making, in a collective effort to create “an emotional and sensorial journey” to the heart of Calabria by discovering local tradition and wisdom.

Kalabria Coast to Coast is divided into three main stops averaging at twenty kilometers each, all with different difficulty levels and landscapes, from medium to medium-high, so that people of all abilities get a chance to enjoy the trail. At every stage, though, hikers can be assured that they’ll have the full assistance of Kalabria Trekking’s volunteers who can be contacted by phone – tourists are also invited to both check-in and out of the trail so their trip can be supervised and they can easily be found in case of an emergency.

There’s also a passport associated with the trail that allows hikers to mark their progress with stamps from each town and village along the way and also enjoy discounts in both restaurants and hotels – the passport is free, even though a voluntary contribution is appreciated.

If you’d like to know more about the trail and the places it includes, you can check out its official page on the Kalabria Trekking website here.
