Conveniently situated for Alpine Crossing trampers and halfway along the highway between the start and finish points, this park is simultaneously in the middle of nowhere and everywhere. It's surrounded by forest with a playground, undercover barbecue area and organically shaped wooden benches in communal areas. Cabins (sleeping two to six) and two-person self-contained units are unflashy but well tended.
It's 24km to both Whakapapa Village and Turangi. Crossing shuttle for $35. Ask about the waterfall walk.
