Mercure Mandalay Hill Resort

Mandalay

In 2018 Accor took over this high-rise, crescent-shaped property, uniquely situated at the foot of Mandalay Hill, and renovated most of the 208 rooms in a sophisticated fashion. The city's top resort hotel has a lovely outdoor pool with a swim-up bar, and the breathtaking Mandalar Spa area, which feels like an Indiana Jones treasure trove.

Two villas, secluded out back, are easily the most exceptional accommodation options in the city, maybe the country, and a good deal (US$500) considering they feel suited to royalty. You reach them by hopping on stones set in a koi pond that operates like a moat.

'Superior' guest rooms are classy yet cosy with watercolours, timeless mirrors, embroidered bed throws and nozzle-style reading lamps. 'Deluxe' versions are slightly larger, with hill views. Discount rates are available, depending on occupancy.

There's live music nightly in the posh gentlemen's-club-like bar, and a highly recommended traditional dance performance and puppet show with a dinner buffet is held nightly in a beautifully landscaped garden area from October to March (7pm, US$38).

There are three restaurants, 3pm high tea and 5pm cocktail hour in the executive lounge; there is also a tennis court, gym and superior service throughout.

At the very back of the property, you can stroll through the resort's organic garden, which abuts a monastery; peek through the fence for a glimpse of the monks' life and to hear their hypnotic chanting.
