Founded by German settlers in 1888, this historic coffee farm, perched atop a hill, offers breathless views over lush, rugged countryside (best enjoyed, cup of coffee in hand, from an easy chair on your room terrace), bush-chic wooden cabins that are comfortable without being over the top, spa services, a gourmet restaurant (mains M$200 to M$250) and tours of the property and surrounds.
Rates are cheaper outside of high season. Note: the road, which used to be very difficult, has been improved over the last few years. There are several options to get here. Finca Hamburgo can arrange pick up from Tapachula (from M$1200 return trip). Combis run twice daily from Mercado San Juan at 5:45am and 11am (three hours). An easier alternative is to take a combi to Finca Argovia and arrange in advance for Finca Hamburgo to pick you up in a jeep (M$150 round trip). It's very do-able and has improved over the last couple of years but, given the steep road conditions, the 12km trip takes around 35 minutes.
