El Ciruelo

Top choice in Tepoztlán

Set in a courtyard with impressive views of the cliffs and pyramid, this long-standing favorite serves an upscale menu of dishes from pechuga con plátano macho (chicken with plantain in mole) and salmón chileno a la mantequilla (Chilean salmon in butter sauce) to good salads and Mexican soups, though prices match the scenery.

There is a wide selection of fine Mexican, Argentine, Chilean and Spanish wines, though only two offerings by the glass. On Saturday and Sunday there are play areas for kids.
