Maison Papaye

Top choice in Mauritius

Set among imposing homes on a residential street away from the sea, this stately chambre d'hôte is a real find. Although the whitewashed facade, gabled roof and periwinkle shutters may hint at a colonial past, the building is only a few years old – the owners designed their retirement getaway to invoke the island's plantation past.

The owners keep tradition alive every evening with their Creole-inspired table d'hôte dinners (€15), served on the shaded veranda.

There's a four-night minimum stay.
