The first resort in remote Thaa Atoll is this glorious creation of the COMO group. The highlights include superb food, an excellent holistic spa and state-of-the-art rooms, all built from scratch in 2014. The island has great stretches of beach, and enjoys its own atmospheric desert island nearby. Tourism in Thaa Atoll couldn't have gotten off to a better start.
Maalifushi's 59 rooms are as cutting edge as you'd expect them to be, given the resort opened less than five years ago; all but six on the island have their own pools. All are huge, and the palatial water villas are particularly impressive, each with a separate living room/dining area, bedroom, vast terrace and big plunge pools. While the style is rather anonymous, it's thoroughly contemporary and tasteful.
Food is definitely a highlight; the Japanese Tai Restaurant, the all-day Madi and Thila restaurants and in-villa dining are all absolutely top-notch. The overwater Como Shambhala Spa offers a full program of pampering.
