If you prefer to be by the beach, this 304-room resort with spa is a good option up the coast on Balok Beach outside Kuantan. It's no newcomer so is a bit tired in places, but many of the rooms have been refurbished and come with a balcony, while the restaurant is a good choice for dinner with live music.

There's a kids club and lots of activities to choose from, including tennis, beach soccer and batik painting, though the main draw is the beach location. Free shuttle services run to and from Kuantan.
