Skopje

This pirate-ship-themed hotel's motto is 'Put your anchor down for the night' – and it's all ersatz antiquity here, with baroque furniture and little round windows from which you can see the river. The interior is wood panelled and neat rooms have mini fridges. Note that a whiff comes off the river sometimes.

Part of the former government's 'sprucing up' of Skopje's centre, the ship looks bizarre, 'moored' as it is in the shallow waters of Vardar River. There is a popular terrace on the deck where locals come for evening drinks.
