Lekach

Jerusalem

In the ultra-Orthodox neighbourhood of Mea She'arim, Lekach is a kosher vegetarian cafe popular with young Haredi men but still a comfortable place for all. It offers up typical eats, such as egg and cheese sandwiches and Israeli staples like fresh boureka (flakey pastry) and jachnun (thinly rolled pastry). But the real highlight is only available on Thursday: vegetarian cholent (hamim in Hebrew), a traditional Jewish stew (normally made with meat) simmered overnight.
