Hitotomaru

Kansai

This three-room hostel, in a vacant old house thoughtfully renovated by its young, English-speaking owners, is ideally set up for self-catering, with a full kitchen. Rooms are Japanese-style and there's the option of a traditional breakfast (¥600). You can rent snorkelling and beach-going gear cheaply here, too.

At the entrance is a small bar (open 6pm to 11pm daily July and August and 6pm to 10pm Friday to Tuesday September to June) – just about the only nightlife spot in Takeno.
