Suginoi Hotel

Beppu

On a hillside above town, the sprawling, skycraping Suginoi offers the tiered rooftop Tanayu rotemburo (outdoor bath), the Aqua Garden onsen swimming pool (combined day use of rotemburo and pool ¥1300), plus a bowling alley, karaoke, and Japanese, Italian and buffet restaurants. The Japanese-style rooms are more alluring than the Western ones, but the 15 Ceada-floor rooms are slick and special.

Rates vary widely by season.
