Shukubō Aso

Kyūshū

Less than 500m from Aso Station, this lovely, rustic ryokan in a 300-year-old samurai house has modern touches and a tree-lined setting. Its 12 rooms have private toilet and shared bathroom, and a dinner of local meats and fish is served around an irori (hearth). It's near pretty Saiganden-ji temple, which dates from AD 726. (Note: it's not nonsmoking.)
