Hamabeno Ryouriyado Houraikan

Northern Honshū (Tōhoku)

Expect superlative hospitality at this seaside gem. The dining experience at this ryokan is exceptional for such a remote place and the onsen facility includes a Zen garden surrounding a large wooden bath, and stunning views from the indoor hot and cold pools. Rooms are light and stylish, with a largely Western decor, save the tatami flooring.

The ryokan's owner, Akiko Iwasaki, was a leader of the local rehabilitation effort after the 2011 tsunami, and is a wealth of information on the region's history and highlights.
