Shūchō no Ie

Hokkaidō

The standard Japanese inn-style rooms are basic, but what you're here for is the chance to spend some time learning about the Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaidō. This place is a chief's house, with a shop selling Ainu-made gifts and a restaurant (guests only) serving traditional Ainu fare.

Little English is spoken but the welcome is warm and, if you're lucky, the charming owner might demonstrate how her Ainu mukkuri (mouth harp) works.
