Kushiro-shitsugen Tōro Youth Hostel

Top choice in Hokkaidō

This hostel, run partly on solar power, was designed with birdwatchers in mind. A porch (partly glassed in) looks directly over the marshes and there are binoculars you can borrow. It's also a peaceful place to spend a few days, with good meals (book ahead, there's not much else around) and comfortable dorm rooms.

From May to November, the hostel runs canoe tours and offers a guiding service, while from December to March it offers tours to see the cranes. It's a few minutes' walk from JR Tōro (塘路) Station, two stops north of Kushiro-shitsugen on the JR Senmō line.
