Kushiro Japanese Crane Reserve

Hokkaidō

Run by Kushiro Zoo, this reserve has been instrumental in increasing the crane population. There are currently 14 tanchō-zuru living here, though they are free to leave anytime they like (the fences are for people, not the birds).

The bus from Kushiro Station to Akanko Onsen stops here (¥910, one hour), or follow Rte 240 between Kushiro and Akanko.
