Daisetsuzan Shirakaba-sō

Top choice in Hokkaidō

A cross between a youth hostel and a ryokan, this mountain lodge near the lower terminal of the ropeway offers comfortable Japanese- and Western-style rooms and hot-spring baths, plus a cool spiral staircase that goes up to a viewing deck. There is a large kitchen available if you're self-catering, but it's worth going for the meal plan.

Lots of options, so check out the website. Nonguests can use the onsen for ¥500.
