Akan Yuku-no-sato Tsuruga

Top choice in Hokkaidō

This old-style resort is the fanciest spot in town and sprawls over three buildings. The honkan (main hall) rooms are the cheapest but don't have lake views; the rooms in the lavish bekkan (annexe) have en-suite outdoor onsen baths. Everyone gets to use the two big bathhouses, one of which has outdoor lake views. Look for sculptures from Ainu artists in the lobby.

This spot is ideal if you want a taste of the classic Japanese upscale ryokan experience. You'll be welcomed at check-in, the room has selected sweets and tea, and the service is impeccable.
