B&B San Fiorenzo

Perugia

Buried in Perugia's medieval centre is this charming B&B, where Luigi and Monica make you welcome in one of three suites, each with its independent entrance. Mod cons and marble bathrooms have been skilfully incorporated into spacious quarters with brick vaulting, lime-washed walls and antique furnishings; the Maior suite even has a shower built into an 11th-century well.

For longer stays, the Tower suite is a fully-equipped apartment set on the ground-floor of a 13th-century tower.

Breakfast is a handsome spread, with homemade cakes, fresh fruit and decent cappuccino.

Incidentally, the church of the same name that sits opposite once harboured Raphael's Ansidei Madonna altarpiece, now in London's National Gallery.
