Dating from 1779, the Teatro Mercadante is home to the city's leading theatre company, the Teatro Stabile Napoli. The company performs a mix of mainly 19th- and 20th-century classics from playwrights as diverse as Luigi Pirandello, Henrik Ibsen, David Mamet and the Roberto Alajmo. Productions are generally in Italian.
