After several hours wandering around the gargantuan Palazzo Ducale, getting neck-ache looking at frescoes, you’ll probably appreciate a quick light lunch at this new restaurant located just across the square and encased in a pretty townhouse with – erm – more ceiling frescoes. The menu is a simple precis of Mantovese food.

Generous portions of risotto alla pilota (rice with crumbled sausage) or tortelli di zucca artiginale (pumpkin ravioli with melted butter and sage) ought to keep the hunger pangs at bay until dinnertime.
