San Pietro

Top choice in Positano

For such a talked-about hotel, the San Pietro is remarkably discreet. Built into a rocky headland 2km east of Positano, it’s almost entirely below road level – if you're driving, look for an ivy-clad chapel and a black British telephone box by the roadside. All the individually decorated rooms have sea views, a private terrace and a hot tub.

Other facilities include a semicircular swimming pool, a Michelin-starred restaurant, and a private beach (accessible by lift) with an adjacent lawn and sunbeds, plus a tennis court. The vast lobby is a suitably swish introduction, draped with brilliantly coloured bougainvillea – an unusual touch. There’s a 24-hour complimentary shuttle service to Positano.
