Station House Hotel

Top choice in County Meath

The 19th-century Kilmessan train station ceased operations in 1947 and now houses this atmospheric hotel. Antique-filled rooms are spacious; the signal box houses a separate two-storey bridal suite. In the former waiting room, the bar retains its original stained glass. Other vestiges of its former incarnation include the railway platforms out front and the turntable in the fairy-lit woodland gardens.

Kids get a train-themed activity sheet at its restaurant. Contemporary Irish cuisine (mains €16 to €25) includes seared Clogherhead sea bass with tarragon sauce or Wicklow lamb shanks with sweet potato and mint; cheaper dining is available in the bar.
