Akhavan Hotel

Southeastern Iran

Faux Corinthian columns and King Kurosh (Cyrus) reliefs give a sense of slightly kitschy grandeur, while warmly decorated rooms are comfortable if slightly ageing. But the main attraction is the chance to meet other travellers attracted by the gregarious, English-speaking Akhavan brothers, who make this Kerman's unofficial information booth for foreign tourists and organise popular day trips to regional sights.

The reception is plastered with postcards from former guests, good restaurant food is fairly priced and Kombivan-driving overlanders can use the secure parking yard and sleep in their vehicles for US$2 per person per day (with bathroom use). Room prices fall by about half in the low season.
