Mayfair Darjeeling

Darjeeling

Originally a maharaja’s summer palace but renovated within an inch of its life, this plush choice sits among manicured gardens and a bizarre collection of kitschy sculptures. The communal areas don’t have quite the charm of some of Darjeeling's other historic hotels, but the rooms are well decorated and many have balconies.

Soft carpets and coal fires add to the warm welcome, and the wicker seats on the bar terrace have fine sunset views. Go for an upper main building or cottage room as the lower rooms suffer from a lack of light. The children’s playroom is good news for families, less so for romantic couples.
