Lotus Bakery

Sikkim

If you are walking to or from Pemayangtse, it's worth popping into the basic, loveably ramshackle Lotus Bakery, 1km from Upper Pelling junction, for a cup of locally grown Demajong Tea (₹20) and a delicious conical macaroon (₹10).

Money raised here helps fund the nearby Denjong Padma Choling Academy for underprivileged children, founded by Sonam Yongda, the Peyangatse monk and former royal aide who features as a character in Andrew Duff's fascinating book Sikkim: Requiem for a Himalayan Kingdom (2015).
