Biksthang

Top choice in Sikkim

If you'd like to escape from techno-modernity, yet unwind with highly educated, thoughtful hosts, it's hard to imagine anywhere better than this isolated but very classy farmstay. Eight artistically appointed cottages are tucked between mandarin, cardamon and organic tea groves; the unique dining room is within a photogenic 18th-century farmhouse, and Khangchendzonga reflects grandly in the infinity pool.

The family's historical links are remarkable – as is their specialist library – so there's lots to discuss over delicious home-cooked Sikkimese food and a pot or three of organic tongba (millet beer). Featured in National Geographic (February 2016), Biksthang is well off the beaten track: an hour's drive from Jorethang or around 45 minutes from Rinchenpong via the Reshi road. Turn towards Mangalbarey at Km15.8 coming from Rinchenpong (or Km8.2 from Reishi), then after 1.4km you'll see the 300m access lane on the left. Jorethang–Mangalbarey shared jeeps pass by. A taxi from Bagdogra airport/Kuluk costs around ₹4500/1000.
