Varkala's flashiest hotel, the hillside Taj-Group Gateway is all gleaming linen and mocha cushions in smart contemporary rooms overlooking manicured gardens; the best boudoirs have sea views and private balconies. There’s a fantastic pool overlooking the beach beyond a sea of palms, along with a bar and a restaurant (though overall it feels a little tired).
