Clarkes Hotel

Shimla

Perfectly located and with an attractive white-and-blue half-timbered exterior, Clarkes opened in 1898 and in 1934 was the first property of what would become the prestigious Oberoi group. Everything is in immaculate condition, though the faultless service is more impressive than the room decor, which does incorporate some older furniture but has a rather forgettable 1990s business style overall.

There's a pretty handkerchief of garden, a large paved terrace area and slightly bland bar and restaurant whose views of the hills are partly obscured by the eight-storey court complex. Discounts of up to 50% (before tax) are possible during low occupancy.
