Kathiwada Raaj Mahal

Top choice in Gujarat & Diu

Nestling next to the village of Kathiwada in Madhya Pradesh, just near the Gujarat border, this breathtaking 19th-century mansion was once the hunting lodge of the Kathiwada royal family. It's been immaculately restored and today offers one of the best heritage-hotel experiences in India. The whole place is rich in stately character, with treasures apparently filling every corner.

The building is draped in flowering bougainvillea and overlooks the beautiful Ratanman Hill Plateau. Every room offers something of magical interest, but the most arresting part of the house is the trophy room, stuffed with the victims of past hunting expeditions. Apart from drinking in the tranquillity of the surroundings, guests can visit tribal villages, trek to the nearby RatanMal wildlife sanctuary via a waterfall or just wander through the property's mango orchards.

Meals are vegetarian and delicious. It's 1½ hours' drive from Champaner. Advance reservations are vital.
