In the middle of summer this campground can look surprisingly raggle-taggle, with hundreds of tents, several structures inundated with hikers, and laundry dangling throughout. The hut accommodates 78 people in close quarters and it is essential to book ahead. There’s a kitchen area for hut guests and showers (500kr for five minutes of hot water) available to all.
Campers pitch tents in designated areas and have access to a sheltered tented dining-room area – ideal for when the weather is ghastly. Wild camping is strictly prohibited, as the entire area is in the protected Fjallabak Nature Reserve. There are several wardens on-site. At the time of writing there was no limit on the number of campers at Landmannalaugar, and you cannot reserve. By road, Landmannalaugar Hut is accessible with 4WD via the F244.
