Just outside the Amerindian village of the same name, Surama boasts thriving rainforest and rich birdlife – indeed, yellow-rumped caciques nest right outside the four simple cabins that surround the striking two-floor restaurant and birding platform here. Rooms have running water and solar power, while a number of cheaper cabins can be found a short distance away.
The village of Surama, which collectively owns the lodge, will impress you with its totem pole and innovative approach to tourism. Local guides teach guests about daily life, including cassava processing and medicinal-plant usage. There are plenty of hiking, bird-watching and dugout canoe trips on offer too.
