Hotel SIB

Top choice in Guinea

If this hotel were anywhere else on Earth it would have been converted into a luxury heritage hotel. As it is, this 1930s colonial building, which was originally constructed to house soldiers recuperating from WWII, is a creaky, character-laden place, dripping in yesteryear romance.

It's situated right on the ridge at the edge of town and you could easily spend many happy hours sitting under the spreading shade of the huge tree on the mirador admiring the superlative views down to the lowlands. Rooms come in three classes with those in the main building (GFr250,000) being the best thanks to high ceilings, old bath tubs and lots of space. The in-house restaurant, which puts on set three-course dinner menus (GFr80,000) is easily the best place to eat in town while the bar is an atmospheric 1930s mirror-lined masterpiece.
