At the top of Kotsifou Gorge, mountainside Taverna Iliomanolis serves superb homestyle Cretan food. There’s no menu, but you’ll be invited into the kitchen to peruse the tempting array of mayirefta (ready-cooked meals), comprising stews, casseroles, soups and local specialities prepared daily.
Meat, wine, olive oil, cheese and raki all come from the family farm. You can also buy bags of local herbs and mountain teas. In peak season, call ahead if you're coming for dinner, as it can occasionally run out of food at busy times.
