Iraklio

Escape the touristy seafood restaurants for this speciality shop, which has nabbed its own wares with proprietary fishing boats since 1926. With around 40 fish and shrimp varieties on ice, you'll be spoilt for choice. Pick your fish, and it'll be grilled or fried up on the spot (€3) and served simply with an olive-oil and lemon sauce.

A few sides (garlic mashed potatoes, fava mash, greens, salads; €3.50 to €8) are also available. Of its four locations in Iraklio, locals say that this spot near the airport is the best.
