Though the building itself is not of the latest vintage, small but fantastic newer rooms beckon at the Capsis Astoria. With splendid oak hardwoods, contemporary art, new TVs, small desks and ceiling fans, they make older rooms accented with historic black-and-white photographs look downright drab. About 30% of the 131-room inventory was finished at research time, with the renovation ongoing.

The hotel's in a handy location next to the Archaeological Museum and the bus stop to Knossos, and there's a summer rooftop pool.
