Greek-American sculptor Deanna Maganias' concept for the city's memorial to the victims of the Holocaust is a fragmented Star of David, made from Egyptian marble and symbolic of the destruction Greece's Jewish communities suffered under Nazi German occupation. The names of the places in Greece from where Jews were deported to concentration camps are inscribed on the pieces of marble.
