Lopé Hôtel

Gabon

Made up of 30 cottages of varying sizes, the Lopé Hôtel has a superb position overlooking a bend of the Ogooué River surrounded by dramatic hills and thick woods. It's a fairly formal place, and feels quite touristy, being on nearly all Gabon visitors' itineraries, but the accommodation is comfortable and the service friendly.

The rooms range from comfortable (if rather cramped) quarters in the lowest categories to huge free-standing cottages with great views. Electricity is turned off between 9am and 11am and from 4pm to 6pm.

The focus here is on activities in and around the national park, which is adjacent to the property. However, with a pool and lovely gardens to wander in, you can also spend your time relaxing in the grounds. The food here is pretty decent, though prices (lunch or dinner CFA23,000) add up fast – the best deals are usually full-board ones with activities included. Enquire at the Lopé Hôtel office in Libreville (where bookings can be made) for what's being offered.
