If ever there was a cafe that summed up St-Germain des Prés’ early-20th-century literary scene, it’s this former hang-out of anyone who was anyone. You'll spend substantially more here to sip un café (€4.80) in a wicker chair on the pavement terrace shaded by dark-green awnings, but it’s an undeniable piece of Parisian history. Also try its wicked hot chocolate.
The famous shop-made hot chocolate come with/without whipped cream (€10.50/8.50) and is served in porcelain jugs. The place's name refers to the two magots (grotesque figurines) of Chinese dignitaries at the entrance.
